The OH Ranch's purebred,
Range Tested® Red Angus herd is almost as old as the registry. With
zero-tolerance culling, the ranch has carefully selected and managed
its Red Angus herd to ensure it represents the very best of the breed.
Excellent fertility, calving ease and economic efficiency are among
the hallmarks of the OH herd.
The
advantages of the OH Range Tested®
Red Angus cattle
can be divided into three broad categories:
The
OH Ranch has proven to maximize these advantages and produce superior
cattle.
REPRODUCTIVE
ADVANTAGES:
The OH Range Tested® Program stresses fertility above all other
factors. OH Red Angus cattle are grazed year-round in the foothills
of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Even with extreme winters and temperatures
as low as minus 40 Celsius, OH Red Angus are given no additional feed
beyond what they can forage. Under these difficult conditions, the
OH Red Angus herd shines consistently.
- 96% conception within
a 60 day breeding season.
- 90% weaning of healthy
vigorous calves each fall.
- <5% assisted births
in mature cow herd.
- <10% assisted births
in first-calf heifers.
(Western Canadian average is 30% assisted births)
- Bull
calves average 84 lbs. (36.3 Kg) at birth.
- Heifer
calves average 78 lbs (34.7 Kg) at birth.
(OH calves are mirroring Canadian breed averages for birthweights.)
ECONOMIC
ADVANTAGES
Beyond superior fertility, calving ease and excellent mothering ability,
OH Range
Tested®
Red Angus are also noteworthy for their economic efficiency.
- Outstanding
feed conversion abilities;
- excellent
conformation;
- moderate
size (mature cows average 1,150 lbs (510 Kg))
- ability
to forage in rough country under severe weather conditions;
- each
cow weans an average of 12-13 healthy caves at close to ½ their
body weight during their lifetime.
The rugged
terrain at the OH Ranch means cattle have to look after themselves,
reducing costs and management time. Because of their coloring and genetics,
OH Red Angus have virtually no cancer eye and rare cases of pink eye
or sunburned udders. These traits and the fact that they are polled,
make Red Angus and Red Angus cross the best choice for replacement heifers.
Each
year the OH sells 300 Red Baldy replacement heifers
at well above market averages, usually to repeat customers. The value
of OH Range Tested®
Red Angus breeding is well proven.
CARCASS
QUALITY
OH
Range Tested®
Red Angus exhibit superior feed conversion, which allows them to thrive
in the difficult conditions of the ranch. Yearling steers and heifers
will quickly reach a finishing weight of ~1,150 lbs. (510 Kg) and produce
carcasses of ~700 lbs. (310 Kg). While other breeds will produce larger
calves and carcasses, the meat is also less saleable because of larger
cuts. Red Angus are sized for the plate, not the scales. Whether purebred
or crossbred, Angus cattle consistently have the highest carcass quality
grades. In large part, this is due to the genetic disposition of Angus
to leanness and excellent marbling (interstitial fat which improves
tenderness, palatability and taste.)
