Our annual
herd health maintenance programs are simple and effective.
MATURE
CATTLE
Each October, when we bring our cows into headquarters for pregnancy
testing. The cows and herd bulls each animal is given a three-way injection
for IBR, BVD and PI3 as well as booster of Vitamins A, D, and E. To
prevent loss in efficiency, our cattle are also treated with a pour-on
application that kills both internal and external parasites.
CALVES
Each calf receives vaccination with an eight-way at branding in June.
At weaning in October, the calves are given a four-way vaccine for IBR,
BVD, PI3 and BRSV. They are also treated with a seven-way booster and
three-way shot for IBR, BVD and PI3.
REPLACEMENT
FEMALES
May 1, yearling heifers are given another seven-way and IBR, BVD and
PI3 booster. In late September they are pregnancy tested and given a
physical examination. At this time they are given a three-way booster
(IBR,BVD,PI3) and Vitamin A, D and E.
We run our cattle in some
of the best ranch country in Western Canada, but this country can also
offer some of the toughest conditions due to harsh winter storms and
extremely low temperatures. The Range Tested® Program ensures OH
cattle can excel under any conditions with minimal inputs. The OH Ranch
provides no winter feed for its cattle, except under extreme and unusual
weather conditions, so the ability to forage and be self-sufficient
is essential.
