Home to Range Tested Red Angus, Hereford & crossbred beef cattle!

In addition to hosting the Annual Range Tested® Production Sale held the second Thursday of November, Longview is home to two herds of cattle:

Although the herds are run separately, they are managed within the strict confines of the Range Tested® program.

The east side of the ranch is made up of three long, sharp ridges, known from west to east as Sam Ridge, Jim Ridge and Whiskey Ridge, named for the stills formerly maintained by locals. These ridges are extremely steep, with the east sides covered in mixed timber of Poplar trees and evergreens, with the west sides rich with grass and prone to warm winter winds called Chinooks. There has been limited clearing of trees and brush through natural and mechanical means to improve accessChecking cows at OH Longview. to the range on these hills.

The central and eastern areas of the ranch feature tall, steep, broad hills with wide, lush valleys. Through out the ranch are areas of willow brush as well as small lakes which attract moose and birds.

There are three main water ways which thread their way through the ranch. The Highwood River serves as the southern border of the property, while Ings Creek and Tongue Creek wind their way through the property. Dugouts and small dams placed in coulees collect water from spring snow melts and several natural springs have been developed for stock watering.

The buildings at the OH Ranch consist of the Main Headquarters, located at the extreme southern end, and three log cabins One of the cabins at cow camp.distributed about the property. Cow Camp, as it is known, is a collection of two log cabins and a log barn located at the north end of Whiskey Ridge approximately three miles (4.8 km) northwest of the main headquarters. This site is used by OH cowboys working cattle at the north and west ends of the ranch. There is also a small cabin located on the bench above the calving fields in 'Spring Coulee'. A third log cabin is located on the banks of the Highwood River.

The ranch has a diverse range of summer and winter pastures. The large variations in terrains and climate across the ranch make it an ideal home for elk, White-Tail and Mule deer, moose, bears, cougars, coyotes and wolves. Strong maternal instincts and calves which get moving quickly are necessary as calving fields are located two miles (3.2 km) or more away from the main headquarters. There is a constant risk of predation from the ranch's native carnivore population.

The entire perimeter of the ranch is fenced, with limited cross fencing. Most of the pastures at the OH Ranch at Longview are well in excess of 1,000 acres (405 hectares) with some pastures as large as 3,000 acres (1,215 hectares). Cowboys on horseback as well as mineral and protein blocks are used to efficiently move the cattle throughout the range.
