Main Headquarters overhead gate west of Longview, Alberta, Canada
Pekisko

Acquired in 1994, OH Pekisko adds two important facilites to the OH operation. Six-hundred and forty acres (259 hectares - 320 aces deeded and 320 acres crown lease) are used as year-round pasture for all of the bulls used in the OH's Range Tested program. The remaining 3,470 acres (1405 hectares - 480 acres deeded and 2,990 acres crown lease) make up Winter Range Inc. The heart of the historic Bar U Ranch winter range, OH Pekisko is located 8 miles (12.8 km) as the crow flies from the OH Main Headquarters, or eight miles directly south from Longview, Alberta.

The OH Longview Cow Boss, also supervises the operation of OH Pekisko, named after the creek whose headwaters are located near the ranch. OH Pekisko is marked by steep hills and broad, lush valleys. The western slopes of the hills are open and covered in hard, nutritious native grasses. Chinooks, warm westerly winds which can raise temperatures to 15 Celsius (62 Farenheit) in one afternoon in the dead of winter, help keep these slopes clear allowing for relatively easy winter forageing. In contrast, the eastern slopes of this area are brush covered in a mixture of Diamond Willow, Poplar trees, and evergreens, providing excellent coverage during harsh winter storms which often affect the area. Stock watering is provided through a mixture of dugouts and developed springs.

As with the rest of the OH operation, pasture management is achieved through the use of protein, mineral and salt blocks and regular working of cattle on horseback. However, unlike the other divisions of the OH operation, Winter Range is used only from November to March for the OH Range Tested commercial herd. In late fall, bred cows are gathered on OH Longview and driven on horseback across the Highwood River to Winter Range. In mid-March, the process is repeated and the cattle are driven eight miles (12.8 km) back across the Highwood to calving pastures on the OH Longview. This drive is conducted in a traditional manner on horseback, so impact on neighboring pastures is extremely limited. During the rest of the year, Winter Range is rested so that native grasses have a complete growing season to replenish.
